KCTX 96-1 FM

 

A 50,000 watt station, KCTX 96.1 FM covers a large area of northwest Texas and southwest Oklahoma with country music from the '70s through today. We have farm blocks at 6am and noon focused on agricultural markets, industry developments, and agricultural news. We're well known for longtime live call-in trade program "The Trading Post," we offer ABC News and weather updates at the top of every hour, sports news throughout the day, local news updates, and lots of localized programming. Seasonally, we offer play-by-play of area high school sporting events, and we are the Dallas Cowboys affiliate for the region.

 

HISTORY

Here's a little history of 96.1 FM. The station was assigned the call letters KQAI on April 5, 1984. On September 29, 1986, the station changed its call sign to KSRW,. Then on February 23, 2001, the call sign changed to the current KCTX.

KCTX 1510 AM / 92-1 FM

 

A 250 watt Daytime AM, KCTX was the first radio station to operate in Childress. It went on the air on July 3, 1947, and faithfully served as Childress's only radio station until 1984. AM stations had already begun losing their music-listening audience to the high fidelity of FM Radio, and with the new FM operating in Childress, KCTX AM began it's downhill slide.

In June of 2009 things began looking up for KCTX AM 1510. The FCC passed FCC 09-59 which basically allowed stations such as KCTX AM 1510 to broadcast on an FM frequency 24 hours per day, thus creating an all new FM Station. Jim Boles of Boles Broadcasting put things in motion, and by February of 2010, 92.1 The Cat was born.

The Cat was designed to be the radio station for Childress, just as it began. With it's Hot AC mix format, the music you'll hear may be the latest in the pop and alternative music scene, or it may take you back a few years. While mostly 90's through Today.  On the hour, every hour get an updated weather forecast, and Texas State Network news from 6a to 7p.

KCTX 1510 went on the air July 3, 1947. It was owned by Golden West Broadcasting Company, and was licensed to operate from it's current location on highway 83 south, around the intersection of prison road. The original tower is still operating, although after a quick study of it, you'll wonder how it's still standing. It was struck by an airplane over 50 years ago, but due to it's unique guy-wire design it has remained standing. The pilot of the aircraft, sadly, was killed in the collision. The studio address on the original FCC application was 217 and 1/2 Main Street. If you go to this location today, look down at the sidewalk. You'll see the call letters stamped into the concrete.

KOLJ AM-1150 / FM-100.7 QUANAH / FM-101.7 VERNON

 

>A 500 watt Daytime AM, KOLJ was the first radio station to operate in Quanah, Texas. KOLJ serves two 22 counties at 1150 AM, and has FM signals in Quanah at 100.7, and Vernon at 101.7. It is dubbed, Texoma's Home for Country Classics, and it's format finds it's core in Country Music from the 1970's and 80's.

KOLJ also is an AP Radio News affiliate, airing newscasts at the top of the hour paired with a weather forecast. There are several Agriculture programming blocks, and KOLJ broadcasts Quanah Indian Sports.

KCHT 99-7 FM

 

A Class C3 FM, KCHT 99.7 was aquired in November of 2013 by James Boles Jr., it was launched as ESPN 99.7 on April 1st, 2014. WIth 24/7 Sports Talk, ESPN is a favorite of sports junkies around the area who enjoy it's sports-centric talk format.
